SOCIO-CULTURAL ANALYSIS OF ISRAEL SGT Bush ALC Class 004-17 NCO Academy SFC Hunsecker Socio-cultural analysis of Israel Culture, defined by the Cambridge english dictionary states that culture is the way of life. Especially the general customs and beliefs, of a particular group of people at a particular time. Culture can be broken down into five major characteristics, which are customs, values, religion, government, and ideas. Customs can be explained as a usual way of doing something by a social particular group or people. In Israel it is customary for the people to be very straight forward while conversing. Religion is a very pivitol part of Israels very being, manly because of the values the religion instills in its followers. Israel has been under scrutiny for centuries, because of their religious veiws. It is through their worship that they have been able to overcome such adversity. Government in israel is much like Americas, with open elections to apointed positions, voted on by the people. Also israel holds a three part system, much like our own. Legislative, the executive, and the judiciary branch make up there government. These branches are created to oversee the creating and ruling of Israelââ¬â¢s basic laws. The current basic laws are as follows, President of the state (1964), The knesset (1958) | The government (2001), The Judiciary (1984), Israel defense force (1976), The Capital Jerusalem (1980), The peoples lands (1960), The state comptroller (1988), The state economy (1975), Human dignity and liberty (1992), and Freedom of occupation (1994). These laws make up how the people of Israel control and govern themselves. One of the most grand ideas of the Israeli people is that of Zionism. Zionism, Jewish nationalist movement that has had as its goal the creation and support of a Jewish national state in Palestine, the ancient homeland of the Jews. As this story begins, Mr. Wright has been murdered and his wife the star witness. The evidence is slowly breaking down their so called case. Women of this time period were not treated like men, a woman was only good when she was slaving for her husband and his needs. The obstacles are difficult but not impossible. They must stay out of trouble, which is very difficult when you live with Lennie, not spending money on liquor or in nightclubs, and working at the ranch long enough to save money to buy the farm. But greater obstacles soon are evident. Some of these obstacles arenââ¬â¢t always recognizable for example Curleyââ¬â¢s violence with Lennie that can cause them to lose their job because Curley is the bossââ¬â¢s son. ââ¬Å"Curleyââ¬â¢s like a lot of little guys. He hates big guys. Heââ¬â¢s alla time picking scraps with big guys. Kind of like heââ¬â¢s mad at ââ¬â¢em because he ainââ¬â¢t a big guy. â⬠Chapter 2. Others are more predictable such as Lennieââ¬â¢s strength and his need to touch soft things, because he has once been fired from another ranch for touching the wrong things. Misunderstanding Lennieââ¬â¢s love of soft things, a woman accused him of rape for touching her dress. George berates Lennie for his behaviour, but is convinced that women are always the cause of such trouble. For George, the greatest risk in the idea of having this dream is Lennie himself. ââ¬Å"God aââ¬â¢mighty, if I was alone I could live so easy. Unhappy because of her husband, she is constantly around the barn, trying to talk to the workers. The second part of her dream is similar to the menââ¬â ¢s desire for their own land. She wanted to be an actress in Hollywood and she imagines how great it would be to stay in nice hotels and owning lots of clothes. Of Mice and Men teaches a grim lesson about the nature of human existence. Nearly all of the characters admit at one time or another, to having a profound sense of loneliness and isolation. Each desires the comfort of a friend, but will settle for the attentive ear of a stranger. They admit to complete strangers their fear of being cast off which shows their desperation. The characters George, Lennie, Crooks, and Curleyââ¬â¢s wife are rendered helpless by their isolation, and yet, even at their weakest, they seek to destroy those who are even weaker than they. Perhaps the most powerful example of this cruel tendency is when Crooks criticizes Lennieââ¬â¢s dream of the farm and his dependence on George. Having just admitted his own vulnerabilities ââ¬â he is a black man with a crooked back who longs for companionship. Steinbeck explores different types of strength and weakness throughout the novel. Great physical strength is valuable to men in George and Lennieââ¬â¢s circumstances. Lennieââ¬â¢s has strength beyond his control ââ¬âlike when he killed the mice. Curley too, he is the symbol of authority on the ranch and a champion boxer, who intimidates men and his wife. But even the most visible strength ââ¬â used to oppress others- is itself born of weakness. Much of the novel is about dreams and we can relate this story to the poem called ââ¬Å"To a Mouseâ⬠by Robert Burns that assumed that the dreams arenââ¬â¢t always achievable just like the American Dream. Most of the characters in Of Mice and Men admit, at one point or another, to dreaming of a different life. Curleyââ¬â¢s wife confessed her wish to become a movie star, just before her death. Crooks, harsh as he is, allows himself the amusing fantasy of having a patch of garden on Lennieââ¬â¢s farm one day, and Candy holds on desperately to Georgeââ¬â¢s vision of owning a couple of acres. What makes all of these dreams typically American is that the dreamers wish for happiness, for the freedom to follow their own wishes. George and Lennieââ¬â¢s dream of owning a farm, which would enable them to sustain themselves, and, most important, offer them protection from an unfriendly world, represents a typical American dream. Their journey, which awakens George to the impossibility of this dream, sadly proves that the bitter Crooks is right: such paradises of freedom, contentment, and safety are not to be found in this world. In the end the Buddha teachings seem to make sense; one of the reasons that the tragic end of George and Lennieââ¬â¢s friendship has such a profound impact is that one senses that the friends have, by the end of the novel, lost a dream larger than themselves. So ââ¬Å"the best is not to dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present momentâ⬠. As Oscar Wilde would put it ââ¬Å" a dreamer is one who can only find his way by moonlight, and his punishment is that he sees the dawn before the rest of the worldâ⬠. The farm on which George and Lennie plan to live is a place no one ever reaches. The men in Of Mice and Men desire to come together in a way that would allow them to be like brothers to one another. That is, they want to live with one anotherââ¬â¢s best interest in mind, to protect each other, and to know there is someone in the world dedicated to protecting them. They show ââ¬Å"ambition, which is the last refuge of the failureâ⬠, ââ¬Å"anyone can be good in the country. There are no temptations thereâ⬠- O. Wilde. Ultimately, however, the world is too harsh and predatory a place to sustain such relationships. They separate tragically. A friendship vanishes and the world fails to acknowledge or appreciate it. This is a story about how humans give meaning to their lives and to their futures by creating dreams. Mcdonald's and you McDonaldization of Society In today's' complicated and ever changing society, we often try to achieve a sense of stability and familiarity around us. One way our culture has tried to make life a little easier is by implementing a function now know as McDonaldization. McDonaldization is defined as the process by which the principles of the fast food restaurant are coming to dominate more and more sectors of American society as well as the rest of the world. (1) The success of McDonalds, and of McDonaldization as a whole, is due to four basic factors--efficiency, calculability, predictability, and control. One of the first functions of McDonaldization is efficiency. Efficiency means choosing the optimum means to an given end. In our society, people like to have things go as quickly and as smoothly as possible, but they do not want to find out the fastest way themselves. Instead, people like to have a system that has already been used and that they know works. Efficiency has its advanta ges for both consumers, who get what they want quickly and with little effort, and for workers, who can perform their tasks in a simple manner. The fast food industry is very streamlined, because hamburgers are the simplest food there is to make. Other foods also do not need a lot of ingredients, and they are simple to make and to eat. Most of the food is also prepared so one can eat it with their hands, thereby reducing the need for utensils. In the process of McDonaldization, consumers are forced to do a good deal of work as well. They have to stand on line, carry their own food, and throw out the garbage. This is not as efficient for the consumer, but it saves time for the workers. Education, health care, and the work place are all becoming McDonaldalized in order to become more efficient. Efficiency in McDonaldization has streamlined many processes, simplified goods and services, and forces the consumer to do work as well. Another factor of McDonaldization is calculability. This tends to put more of an emphasis on quantity rather than quality, but it allows the consumer to get a lot of food quickly. When things are easily counted, it facilitates the process by making it more predictable by using the same amount of materials. Part of McDonalds is an emphasis on size. Everything is super sized, or have names that make food items seem larger than they actually are. Calculability, however, also leads to the quality of the food being neglected. Because people feel as if they are getting a lot of food for their money, they are not as worried about how good it tastes. Food is always weighed and measured precisely, which is another part of calculability. All burgers weigh the same amount, there are the same number of fries in each container, and the new drink machines dispense the same amount to each cup. This same theory is seen in our education system. Students are herded through, and no one really pays much attention to what or how they are learning, just that they receive high grades so they can get into a good college. Health care has also seen the impact of these, because now patients are mainly treated just to squeeze some money out of them, and doctors seemingly don't truly care about their patients anymore. Calculability basically reduces the quality of goods, but improves the quantity of them. The third function of McDonaldization is predictability. In our society, people usually want to know exactly what to expect from a given situation. Predictability gives the consumer a break from having to make difficult decisions, and the worker can perform their task with little effort. The needs of everyone become easily anticipated. One of the first places predictability became common was with motel chains. Before motels became franchised, guests didn't know exactly what they would be getting, for the good or the bad. But then hotels such as Holiday Inn and Howard Johnson's started, and guests knew exactly what they were going to get when they stayed there.
